DeafDigest Mid-Week edition – November 5, 2018

— DeafDigest salutes a Deaf Daredevil that departed us

Kitty O’Neil, who was deaf, has departed us. As a much
younger woman between the late sixties through early
eighties, she was the nation’s top Daredevil, either
deaf or hearing. She broke vehicle land speed records
on flat earth surfaces, driving as fast as 600 miles
per hour. And in Hollywood she performed many movie
stunts, always in demand by these film studios.
After her daredevil days, she retired and led a
quiet life.

— a Microsoft policy that many other companies don’t follow

Jenny Lay-Flurrie, who is deaf and is the Microsoft Chief
Accessibility Officer said there is a policy that everytime
her company comes up with something new, it MUST be
deaf-friendly. Despite ADA laws, many companies do not
make their new products deaf-friendly!

— One of World’s Best Vacation hotels

The U.S. News & World Report came up with its Best Vacations
rankings. It mentioned Rome as the #2 best in the world and
also mentioned The Hassler hotel as the best. This hotel is
owned and operated by Roberto Wirth, who is deaf. As a young
man he attended Gallaudet and then NTID before moving back
to Rome to start his hotel career, much against the wishes
of his parents! They felt a deaf person cannot run a hotel.
Roberto has proved them wrong many times.
