Top stories about the deaf:
A deaf man has been held in prison in Virginia
for 13 years without a trial. The big issue
is not only his lack of understanding of
sign language but also of English or in
Spanish, the language that was spoken around
him while he was growing up in El Salvador.
There was a newspaper story about the Deaf Community
of Grand Junction, Colorado having only – just – one
certified interpreter!
The National Union of British Sign Language Interpreters
(equivalent to our RID) said that the interpreting
industry has problems – interpreter strikes, interpreting
agencies going out of business and shortage of
interpreters.
A priority at Daytona State College in Florida
is hosting events that would create awareness
on the needs of deaf students.
There was a story about public apathy in India
against public office candidates that are either
deaf or disabled. One such candidate is deaf.

A DEAF TAXI DRIVER
Could a deaf person drive a taxi cab? DeafDigest, some years
back, brought it up, and one subscriber, who requested
anonymity, said he drove taxi cabs for a short while before
giving it up.
DeafDigest editor was reading a book – and there was a
story of a deaf taxi driver in Mexico. In fact, he owned his
own taxi cab.
One obvious question is – how does he communicate with his
passengers that needed to be driven to their destinations?
Very simple – he would hand over the pad and pen and
ask them to write down their destinations. Not a problem
in almost all of the cases, he said.
note:
this video is obsolete, but it is good to know what
went on in the past with few deaf taxi cab drivers.

A DEAF GROUP WANTED TO FIGHT IN WORLD WAR I
During the World War I (1917-1918), past President
Theodore Roosevelt, thought the deaf can fight in the
war.
He wanted to form again a group called the Rough Riders.
This past group fought in the Spanish-American War
(1898). He asked for deaf volunteers to join the new
Rough Riders.
Many deaf volunteers signed up for the new Rough
Riders group, and were ready to fight in World
War I.
President Woodrow Wilson turned down Roosevelt’s
idea!

Rene Pellerin’s Corner:
Fajita chicken was for dinner!
My daughter searched for salsa from our cabinet.
She read that the expiration date was “August 2011”!
That makes me wonder if the DeafBlind guy will
survive-how is that bar code reader working?
The salsa is on its way out to compost pile!
Rene’s show business started in year 2010 and it focuses on the
Deaf-Blind.
